Rusa

Rusa deer are medium to large tropical deer native to Indonesia and nearby islands, including Java, Bali, and Timor, with related forms occurring in parts of Southeast Asia. Mature stags often weigh about 200–350 pounds, while hinds commonly weigh about 120–220 pounds. They are usually gray-brown to dark brown, with coarse hair, long ears, and a heavier neck in mature males. Stags carry three-tined antlers and may develop a mane-like appearance during the rut. Rusa deer are hardy, adaptable grazers and browsers that do well in warm climates. In the United States, rusa have been maintained in zoos, wildlife parks, and private exotic ranches, particularly during the mid-to-late 20th century as interest in Asian and tropical deer species grew among exotic wildlife operations.
