White Bison

White bison are not a separate species but a rare white, cream, or pale color phase of the American bison. Their size is the same as standard American bison, with mature bulls often weighing 1,000–2,000 pounds and cows generally weighing 800–1,200 pounds. The white coloration may result from leucism, albinism, dilution genetics, or crossbreeding history, depending on the individual animal. White bison have strong cultural and spiritual significance for many Native American communities and are often treated with special respect. Because American bison are native to North America, white bison were not introduced into the United States; they occur rarely in native, conservation, and private herds.
