The Burchell zebra is a southern form of plains zebra native to southern Africa, including regions of Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and surrounding areas. Mature stallions generally weigh about 550–850 pounds, while mares commonly weigh about 500–750 pounds. They have the classic black-and-white zebra striping, though southern plains zebra forms may show shadow striping or reduced striping on the legs. Burchell zebras are social grazers that live in harems and larger herds on open grasslands and savannas. They were introduced into U.S. zoos in the late 1800s and early 1900s, with private ranch and safari-park ownership expanding during the 20th century.
