The mountain goat is a native North American caprid found in the Rocky Mountains, Cascades, Alaska, western Canada, and other rugged high-elevation areas. Mature billies commonly weigh about 150–300 pounds, while nannies usually weigh about 120–180 pounds. They are white, thick-coated, sure-footed animals with black horns, black hooves, and dense underfur adapted to cold mountain climates. Despite the name, mountain goats are more closely related to goat-antelopes than domestic goats. They are native to North America and were not introduced into the United States, though they have been translocated or restored in some western mountain regions for wildlife management.
