The steenbok is a small antelope native to eastern and southern Africa, where it inhabits open grassland, savanna, scrub, and lightly wooded country. Adults weigh about 15–35 pounds and stand roughly 18–24 inches at the shoulder. The coat is reddish-fawn with a white belly, throat, and eye markings; males carry short upright horns, while females are hornless. Steenbok are usually solitary or paired, alert, and rely on camouflage and quick dashes into cover. They browse and graze selectively and can survive in dry habitats. In the United States, they are mostly zoo or specialized collection animals and are not common in mainstream ranch production. (Animal Diversity Web)
