The African collared-dove and domestic ringneck dove are closely associated dove types originating from Africa and long maintained in captivity. Adults generally weigh about 4–7 ounces, with males and females similar in size. They are usually pale fawn, cream, white, gray, or cinnamon, with a dark collar or half-ring around the back of the neck. Ringneck doves are gentle, prolific, and commonly kept in aviaries, educational settings, and as ornamental birds. They were introduced to the United States as captive domestic and aviary birds, with widespread private ownership developing during the 20th century.
