Bison

“Bison” is a general term that may refer to the American bison of North America or the European bison, also known as the wisent. In the United States, the term most often refers to the American bison, a native species with bulls commonly weighing 1,000–2,000 pounds and cows usually weighing 800–1,200 pounds. Bison are dark brown, heavy-shouldered, horned grazers with dense winter coats and strong herd behavior. They are not exotic when referring to American bison, because they are native to North America. Bison have been maintained on U.S. private ranches, tribal lands, conservation preserves, and public lands since restoration efforts began in the late 1800s.
