Boer

The Boer goat is a domestic meat goat breed developed in South Africa and now widely used in the United States for meat production and crossbreeding. Mature bucks commonly weigh about 240–300 pounds, while does usually weigh about 150–225 pounds. Boer goats are typically white-bodied with red or brown heads, though solid and paint patterns also occur. They are muscular, fast-growing, fertile, and well adapted to brush and pasture systems. Boer goats were introduced into the United States in significant numbers in the early 1990s through imported genetics from New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa-related lines, and they rapidly became one of the most important meat goat breeds in the country.
