The defassa waterbuck is a subspecies group of waterbuck native to western, central, and parts of eastern Africa. Males can weigh roughly 440–660 pounds, while females are usually smaller, around 350–460 pounds; shoulder height is about 47–54 inches. Unlike the ellipsen or common waterbuck, defassa waterbuck usually lack the complete white rump ring and instead show a broader white rump patch. Males carry long, forward-curving horns; females are hornless. They are water-associated grazers that prefer grasslands, floodplains, and woodland edges. U.S. introduction is best described as mid-to-late 20th century through zoos, safari parks, and private ranch collections. (Animal Diversity Web)
