Dik-dik, Kirk’s

Kirk’s dik-dik is one of the best-known dik-dik species, native to eastern Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, and nearby arid scrub regions. Adults usually weigh 6–13 pounds and stand about 12–16 inches at the shoulder. Their yellow-gray to reddish-brown coat, white belly, large ears, elongated nose, and tiny male horns make them distinctive. Kirk’s dik-diks are monogamous or pair-bonded, territorial, and usually live in pairs or small family groups. They browse leaves, shoots, flowers, and fruits and get much of their water from vegetation. In the United States, they are primarily zoo or specialized collection animals, with late-20th-century managed-care presence. (Animal Diversity Web)
