Ibex are wild goats native to mountainous regions of Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. Depending on species, mature males may weigh about 150–300 pounds, while females usually weigh about 60–150 pounds. Ibex are known for long, backward-curving, ridged horns, strong hooves, compact bodies, and excellent climbing ability. Coat colors range from tan and brown to gray, blackish, and reddish, often changing seasonally. Ibex live in rocky mountains, cliffs, alpine meadows, and dry uplands. In the United States, various ibex species have been kept in zoos, wildlife parks, and private exotic ranches during the 20th century.
