The miniature donkey, often called the Mediterranean miniature donkey, originated from small donkey types of Sicily, Sardinia, and nearby Mediterranean regions. Mature jacks and jennies usually weigh about 200–350 pounds and generally stand under 36 inches at the withers. They are commonly gray-dun with a dorsal stripe and shoulder cross, but may also be brown, black, spotted, or sorrel. Mini donkeys are gentle, hardy, social, and popular as companion animals, small-farm livestock, and youth project animals. They were imported into the United States in the early 20th century and became increasingly popular in private ownership during the mid-to-late 1900s.
