Sable

The sable antelope is a large and impressive antelope native to wooded savannas of eastern and southern Africa. Males may weigh around 500–525 pounds, while females commonly weigh around 480 pounds and are slightly shorter; shoulder height is often 46–56 inches. Mature bulls become glossy black, while females and young are chestnut to dark brown; both sexes have white facial markings, white belly and rump patches, and long backward-curving horns. Sable are strong social grazers and are highly valued in wildlife conservation and ranch breeding. They entered U.S. zoo, safari-park, and exotic ranch collections during the late 20th century.
