The Scottish Highland, often called the Highlander or Highland cattle, is a hardy domestic cattle breed native to the Highlands and islands of Scotland. Mature bulls commonly weigh about 1,500–1,800 pounds, while cows usually weigh about 900–1,300 pounds. They are famous for long sweeping horns, shaggy double coats, and colors that include red, black, dun, yellow, brindle, silver, and white. Highland cattle are cold-hardy, efficient grazers, and well suited to rough forage and harsh climates. They were introduced into North America in the late 1800s and have since become popular in the United States for small farms, grass-fed beef, heritage livestock programs, and ornamental ranch herds.
