The swamp water buffalo is a domesticated water buffalo type native to Southeast Asia and southern China, traditionally used in rice agriculture and wetland farming. Mature bulls usually weigh about 1,200–2,000 pounds, while cows often weigh about 800–1,500 pounds. They are generally gray to dark slate in color, with large crescent-shaped horns, strong legs, and a heavy, low-set body. Swamp buffalo are excellent draft animals and are well adapted to marshes, mud, heat, and humid environments. In the United States, they have been present mainly in specialty livestock farms, zoological collections, and private agricultural operations during the 20th century.
